PSG forum introduces candidates
to students

Fliers touting the presidential and senatorial
candidates running for the open seats in Purdue Student Government cover
the campus sidewalks.
At tonight's PSG meeting, students will have an
opportunity to put a face to the names on those fliers, as there will
be an open forum for students to ask questions at 7 in LAEB, Room 2290.
PSG elections started Tuesday night at midnight
and will run until Thursday at midnight. The fact that the forum is
this evening has both presidential candidates wondering how much of
an impact it will have on the outcome of the election.
School of Liberal Arts senator Sean Cowley said
the primary goal of the meeting is to give the candidates the chance
to be heard.
"The main thing we are concerned with is making
sure that all candidates have ample time to express their opinions and
the general public has the time to voice their concerns," Cowley said.
"We are trying to make this as legitimate of an organization as possible,
and while we realize there are going to be a lot of new faces in the
fall and we want to show that these are very legitimate people that
are coming into office."
Dave Purpura, who is one of the two remaining presidential
candidates, expressed his concern about how much the students would
gain from attending the forum.
"This forum is beneficial but I think it would
better serve the students if they had it before the start of elections
because the majority of students here cast their ballot during the first
night of voting," Purpura said. "However, (the forum) will give the
general student population a chance to be better informed and allow
them to see the candidates as people instead of just words on paper."
PSG presidential candidate Greg Canfield viewed
the timing of the forum as something the next regime can learn from.
"I'm disappointed that the forum wasn't earlier
but this is a learning experience, this is something that we can work
on changing for next year," Canfield said. "Overall, because of PSG's
new structure and all the new people this year, we hope we are able
to solve some of the minor problems for next year."
