Purdue libraries rank low on listBy Rachael Conley The libraries of Purdue do not compare well to the libraries of the other universities in the Big Ten. "I can say we do not, if you look across the Big Ten, stack up well," said Emily Mobley, dean of libraries. "That fact is all laid out there." By "there" Mobley means the list of holdings of university research libraries in the United States and Canada found in the 2000/2001 Almanac Issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. On this list, Purdue's research libraries are listed as number 75 out of 111. "There's a set of complex (qualifying) variables that has to do with size, budget and numbers of university (doctoral) programs," said Mobley. "The statistics that we provide are for the combination of the 15 libraries (at Purdue)." The ranked categories are volumes in library, volumes added, current serials, permanent staff and total expenditures. Every one of the Big Ten libraries is listed, said Mobley. Mobley said there are a few reasons Purdue doesnt relate well to the other universities in the Big Ten. For one, some universities include more than just the libraries on the main campus. Early spring lacks stormsThe United States has experienced a low occurrence of tornadoes so far this year with only 11 recorded, compared to last year's average of 178 recorded in mid-March. These low numbers of tornadoes have only occurred three times prior to this year. In1951, eight tornadoes occurred; there were four in 1969, and six in 1988. According to Ken Scheeringa, Indiana's state climatologist with the agronomy department at Purdue, the unusually small number of tornadoes that have occurred is due to the lack of collisions between the polar jet stream and the tropical jet stream. The polar jet stream is a cold front that usually flows south from Canada. This year, it has traveled east and west rather than toward the south, keeping the colder weather in Canada and allowing for a mild winter in the United States. The tropical jet stream is a warm front that has grown in strength this winter and has steered southern storm systems across Texas and toward the East Coast of the United States, avoiding any collision with colder fronts that cause tornadoes. Better Than Ezra to play at eventThere are few Ezras on Purdue's campus, however, Purdue Student Government decided to one-up them by bringing in popular band Better Than Ezra. Better Than Ezra will play at 7 p.m. on April 14th as the headliner of the 2002 edition of the Purdue Student Government Grand Prix Kick Off Concert, which will be held at Slayter Center. The band has had such hits as "Good" and "Desperately Wanting" and is well known for their ability to get the audience involved with their shows. PSG president Brenda Shea was delighted about the band's decision to come. "I am so excited that Better Than Ezra is our headlining band for the Grand Prix Kick Off Concert," Shea said. "They are an amazing band with a tremendous following. I think students with many different musical interests will really enjoy their show." |
