Police investigate report of impersonation

From Staff Reports

Due to a complaint called in to the Purdue Police Department, police are looking for information about a man who may have been impersonating a police officer on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the incident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The impersonator, who was reportedly driving a white sedan with blue and red flashing lights on the dashboard and some type of emblem on the side door panels, pulled over a woman and yelled at her repeatedly, telling her to get out of the car.

According to police, when the woman asked the man for his badge number and identification he would not give it to her, so she refused to get out of the car. When the woman didn't receive a traffic citation she drove away from the scene.

According to police, the man got in his car and followed the woman through West Lafayette to State Road 26 and then west of the Lafayette city limits. That is when the woman contacted the department to report the incident.

The woman helped police construct a composite drawing of the man, whom she described as approximately 6 feet 2 inches with a stocky build, short, dark brown hair with bangs over his forehead and about 30 to 35 years of age.

Purdue police are still investigating the incident and urge people to be cautious.

"The Purdue Police Department would like to remind women to take safety precautions if they suspect something is amiss," said Capt. Ron Fosnaugh of the Purdue Police Department in a recent press release. "Only roll down windows a few inches to be able to hear the person. If an officer refuses to identify himself or herself, drive to the nearest police department of populated area."

Anyone with information regarding this incident or the persons involved should contact the Purdue Police Department at 494-8221.
