The department of earth and atmospheric sciences
and the School of Consumer and Family Sciences will both have tents
set up in the Memorial Mall that host a variety of activities geared
toward elementary school students.
Purdue students, faculty and administration put
forth several hours of work in order to coordinate each of the events.
"Our goal is to get [kids] interested in science,"
said Wilella Burgess,
Outreach Coordinator in the department of earth
and atmospheric sciences. "Hopefully, they will find out that science
is fun and something they want to pursue."
This is the second year the department of earth
and atmospheric sciences has participated in Spring Fest; however,
Burgess said that the department's tent is more
focused this year. It will highlight only two areas - weather and paleontology.
Children can participate in amber polishing to
locate insects, make fossil footprints and look at fossils found around
Indiana. These future paleontologists can uncover and assemble small
mock dinosaur skeletons from a deposit of sand as well. The department's
tent will also allow people to have their picture taken against a tornado
backdrop.
Teresa Eloff, director of undergraduate recruitment
in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, has also been busy helping
to coordinate a tent full of events. The child development and family
studies department will hold a children's story time, craft projects
and educational games and will also distribute informational pamphlets
to parents. Consumer science and retailing department plans to teach
kids to spend and save money responsibly though their Bozo-like Grand
Prize Game, while the foods and nutrition department will take milk
mustache pictures.
"We want everyone to come out and have a good time
this weekend," said Eloff.
Spring Fest activities take place from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
