Tidal pool returns to Spring Fest

The departments of biology and food science intend to provide people of all ages with interesting educational opportunities as part of Spring Fest on Saturday and Sunday.

Food Science's "Fun Fair" tent will include cotton candy making with the Food Science Club and making can banks to show kids how to use a sealer. For the older crowd, someone will be explaining how food is made for the astronauts in a NASA display.

"The display will include samples of freeze-dried ice cream, which is something not many people have heard of or tried before," said Stacey Dunderman, schedule deputy for the food science department.

The Food Science Graduate School Association will also be providing chili under the Fun Fair tent, to be located outside of the Food Sciences building.

More than 60 people are involved with this year's biology department activities, from freshmen students and the biology club all the way up to professors and deans.

"It's really great how far up the ladder we have people getting involved. For example, Associate Dean Chris Sahley is doing an exhibit on how leeches learn," said Clark Gedney, director of the Biomedia Center for Instructional Design.

The most popular event each year is the hands-on tidal pool, where participants can pick up marine animals such as sea urchins, sandstars and sea dollars. They can also learn about sea urchin embryology with freshmen biology students.

Professors in the department of biological sciences Laurie Iten and Donna Fekete, along with others, will run a chicken embryology exhibit.

"The last few years, we've run a video camera with this, and it's surprising — while little kids with magnifying glasses tear holes into the eggs, 50 percent of the people trying to get in on the activities are adults," said Gedney.

Other activities include DNA extraction with John Anderson and human electrocardiograms with Dave Bridges, both of the biological sciences department. All biology events will take place in the main lobby of Lilly Hall of Sciences.
