Club to exhibit survival strategies for animals

Chameleons, fireflies and jellyfish… OH MY!

In the continuation of education towards children, adults and fellow students, the biochemistry club will be hosting "Survival 101, Survival Strategies for Animals," this weekend.

The event is free and all who wish to learn more about biochemistry are invited.

The biochemistry club is devoted to educating the masses on the complex matter of biochemistry. According to Joseph Ogas, professor in the department of biochemistry, for the past few years the biochemistry club has been focusing their work on outreach programs. The club organizes events in which they visit elementary schools to perform demonstrations and to talk to children about the possibilities offered in biochemistry.

"For most people, biochemistry seems really daunting. The biochemistry club tries to change that perspective," said Ogas.

This weekend, the club will host the program, which is one of the booths in attendance of Spring Fest.

The exhibit will consist of basic survival techniques for different organisms. Barbara Sanchez-Neri, a junior in the School of Agriculture and vice president of the biochemical club, looks forward to sharing her knowledge with the potential participants.

"Topics will consist of different types of camouflage and how animals use camouflage (to protect themselves) from predators," said Sanchez-Neri. One topic is "why a chameleon changes colors. Another topic will be about bio-luminescence, that is glowing, like glow in the dark jellyfish and fireflies."

Though the topics may seem entertaining, the main goal of the club is to educate.

"We want to educate the community about things that have to do with biochemistry and educate young people. We'll have Web sites available for further information and people can ask us questions if they have any," said Sanchez-Neri.

Other topics will include termites and their pheromones. To check it out, stop by between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the Food Science Building.
