Festival event to feature gardening, Peter RabbitBy Heather Holman Peter Rabbit will assist the Purdue chapter of the Associated Landscape Contractors of America with this year's Spring Fest event of kitchen gardening. Kitchen gardening will focus on the different ways to use a vegetable or herb garden, Chris Geryak, president of the Associated Landscape Contractors of America said. The group hopes to teach people how gardens can be utilitarian and aesthetic, while also educating children about gardening. This year, children who stop to visit will be able to pick up tips on gardening, hang out with Peter Rabbit, plant their own seeds in a cup to take home and eat cotton candy, among other treats. There will also be a displayed garden to show home gardeners how gardens can become more ornamental. Paul Siciliano, Associated Landscape Contractors of America's faculty advisor, said gardens don't have to be like grandpa's backyard, they can be more decorative. Associated Landscape Contractors of America developed the kitchen garden idea as a continuation of last year's event. Geryak said the group wanted to spotlight different aspects of home gardening that people could relate to. "The idea for (Associated Landscape Contractors of America) Garden Spotlighting came for the idea to promote our club to the public," said Siciliano. "We wanted to start something that the public could come to see annually and see what is new in the Green Industry." Last year the group took a more "how to" approach by showing demonstrations on planting and pruning, Siciliano said. "We also included demonstrations on proper methods for constructing garden walls and laying paving materials." n The kitchen garden spotlighting event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in front of the Entomology building.
