Horticulture Show to feature contemporary garden themeBy Kate Johann This weekend, the Purdue Horticulture Society will continue an 89-year-old tradition when it presents its annual Horticulture Show. Brandon Powell, a junior in the School of Agriculture and chairman of the show, said the society decided to hold the show during Purdue's Spring Fest so the thousands of people who are at the event can come to the show. The show will take place on Saturday and Sunday between the Horticulture Building and the Headhouse. "We use this opportunity to showcase what we have learned in our design and horticulture classes to create a garden paradise behind the Horticulture Garden," Powell said. The society's Web site has information about the show and what spectators can expect to get out of it. The site says the show will illustrate the latest trends in home gardening and participants can learn tips on gardening. "Each year we choose a different theme, this year being contemporary gardening including (the categories of) bird and butterfly, Feng Shui, art and sculpture, backyard entertaining and water garden," said Powell. In addition to demonstrating what they've learned in class, the members of the society will set up a children's booth, so that they may learn about the plants on display, according to the Web site. Every plant on display, as well as many others, may be purchased during Spring Fest. "This is the main fund raiser for the club that goes to fund our club activities, scholarships and field trips," said Powell. "We have everything from annuals and perennials to shrubs and trees." Powell said the society grows most of the smaller plants themselves, but businesses donate the larger shrubs and trees for the show. Powell and the society are optimistic about the show. "Our goal for the weekend is to get people to see what we can do, get ideas for their own gardens and just to enjoy the display," he said.
