Senate to discuss athletes

From Staff Reports

In today's University Senate meeting the main topic of discussion is the academic status of student athletes at Purdue.

According to University Senate document 01-2, the athletic affairs committee of the senate and the intercollegiate athletics department tend to the "academic and social well being of student athletics."

In conjunction with the intercollegiate athletics department, the committee will be reporting on the status of student athletes on campus and on its goals for athletes in the future.

The goal would call for the grade point averages of athletes to be "equal to or greater than the campus semester average."

As reported in the document, for the fall 2001 semester on average, student athletes received a higher GPA by .06 than the University wide GPA average.

In addition to student athlete GPAs, the committee will be discussing athlete graduation rates, the faculty control of athletics and the highlights of Purdue sports teams during 2001.

Although the academic status of student athletes will be one of the main topics at today's meeting, the senate will also hear a report from the board of trustees and discuss nominations for several senate committees.

The educational policy committee has eight positions to fill, the faculty affairs committee has six vacancies, the student affairs committee has two vacancies and the University resources policy committee has five vacancies.
