United States Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., spoke out against a financially irresponsible Washington Wednesday at Purdue.

Bayh came to Purdue to explain why he was the only Senate Democrat to vote against the federal budget last Friday, which passed by a vote of 51-44. According to him, the proposed budget will add at least $2 trillion to America's gross national debt over the next five years, which he said was irresponsible.

"Those on the far right want more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Those on the far left want us to spend money we don't have and continue to borrow from China. Neither of these is the right course," Bayh said.

"Washington is just out of touch and broke. Families are tightening their belts, businesses are tightening their belts, but the federal government is not."
