Purdue University pulled in more than $247 million from private fundraising and non-government sponsored research.

Of the $247 million, $201 million will be given in gifts to the University, while $46 million will go toward non-government sponsored research.

Purdue President France C'rdova said the new Access and Success funding drive, created to contribute to scholarships, programs and athletics, will receive a lot of funding, including $64 million for scholarships and programs.

"Access and Success has struck a deep and resounding chord with the many people who believe, as we do, that good students should have access to a Purdue education and the support to succeed in their academic endeavors," she said.

Murray Blackwelder, senior vice president for advancement, said Purdue is committed to helping students.

"That's part of our mission as a land grant," he said. "As the cost of higher education goes up, we think we have an obligation to offset the cost."

According to Blackwelder, the amount of gifts to Purdue was impressive given that the University just ended the Campaign for Purdue in June of 2007. Campaign for Purdue was the University's largest fundraising drive in its history, raising more than $1.7 billion in seven years.

Purdue was recognized for its fundraising during the last three years with an award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The WealthEngine Award for Educational Fundraising in the overall performance category was given to the University and 36 other schools from across the country.
