The Purdue Cycling Club hoped to make a statement in two races this weekend and, despite some rainy weather on Sunday, succeeded in doing so.

The most notable result for the team over the weekend was Purdue A-level rider Chris Uberti winning the A-race on Saturday at the Purdue Cycling Club Road Race and Team Time Trial event.

“Chris winning this weekend definitely made a statement in the conference,” president Brian Richter said. “We’re still contenders for nationals.”

There were around 205 riders overall who competed on Saturday.

But Uberti wasn’t the only one to put up positive results for the Boilers. Stephen Sehr won the C-level race, while Purdue rider Aimee Hossler placed sixth in the women’s B-race.

Also in the B-category, the Purdue men had a six-seven-eight finish, racking up points for the team, said member Naveen John.

In addition to doing well in many of the categories, Purdue was able to hold off foe Marian College, a school known for its impressive riding.

“Marian didn’t win any races despite its kick-ass team,” John said. “We were happy about that. We deprived them of their victory.”

On Sunday they were supposed to compete in Marian’s Midwest Cycling Classic race in Indianapolis, but it was rained out before the A-races could begin. Before this occurred, the men were able to come up with a few top ten finishes, including one for Richter.

There will be few more races for the team before attempting to qualify for regionals and nationals.

The team hopes to carry forth its results from this weekend into future races.
