Recently a few Purdue entities (Student Government, Boiler Green Initiative and ITaP) decided to make double-sided printing the default option in computer labs across campus. We applaud a move in the paper-saving direction; and, maybe, just maybe, this decision will inspire the University to make even more permanent green choices.

A few weeks ago Purdue had its annual Green Week. Many things were experimented with, but, in the end, few permanent changes were made. Countless students wondered whether being “green” was just a publicity stunt for the University. With the transition (which will take effect immediately after October Break) from single- to double-sided printing, however, we’re pleased to see some sectors of Purdue are making progress in “green-ness.”

ITaP should consider partnering up with Boiler Green Initiative more often. There are many issues besides printing in computer labs on campus that could be fixed with prudence. For example, many labs are full of computers with two monitors to every “brain” part of the computer.

Please, will someone tell us why a student needs TWO monitors for one computers’ work? Doesn’t this use up an excess amount of energy? Yes, the monitors don’t require terribly large amounts of power. But, a penny saved is a penny earned, as they say. Those extra monitors could be sold to give money back to the University. Or they could be used for other computers, so more students could have access to them. And, we’d be saving on energy by not having two computer screens humming along when just one would suffice.

We give twelve thumbs way up for PSG, GBI and ITaP’s decision on the printing. Now, we hope the “initiative” part of “Boiler Green Initiative” doesn’t die after one good decision. Keep up the green changes, Purdue!
