The Boilermakers will face their in-state rival for the second time this season, but this time there is a little more on the line.
The Purdue volleyball team (11-12, 3-9 Big Ten) will play rival Indiana tonight and look to bring the Monon Spike trophy home with them.
The Monon Spike is a traveling trophy that is played for once each season. The sister trophy of the Old Oaken Bucket, it has been won by the Boilermakers five of the last six years.
The Boilermakers hope to add another to “P” to the trophy’s links despite a tough loss to the Hoosiers earlier this season. On Sept. 30, Purdue dropped a closely contested five-game match to Indiana at home.
The team is led by senior outside hitter Carrie Gurnell, who is averaging 3.24 kills per set, and junior setter Jaclyn Hart, who adds 10.16 assists per set. The Boilermakers and Hoosiers are currently tied for ninth in the Big Ten and each look to take advantage of the match.
Aside from the Spike on the line, the Boilermakers look to improve their overall record. A win against the Hoosiers would move the team to 12-12 on the season and would snap a four-match losing streak.
The Boilermakers will face the Hoosiers at 7 tonight in Bloomington, Ind. The match will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
