Sources close to the Purdue men’s basketball team are saying junior forward Robbie Hummel tore his anterior cruciate ligament Wednesday night against Minnesota and will be out for an unclear amount of time.

The severity of the tear was not immediately known, though any ACL tear likely means the end to this season.

Hummel’s parents couldn’t be reached for comment at their home phone, and the Naismith Award finalist is unavailable to media.

A press release from the Purdue Athletic department confirming the injury is expected today.

The junior forward was averaging 15.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game this season.

“He means a lot to our team. He’s a good player. I always say he pieces everything together on both ends for us. He makes a lot of players better,” coach Matt Painter said to reporters after Purdue’s win in Minneapolis.

The Boilers still have a one game lead in the Big Ten standings over Michigan State and Ohio State, with three games remaining. Purdue next plays Michigan State at 4 p.m. Sunday.
