Paid time off: PTO policy a reflection of Purdue Paid time off a bad change To the editor: Purdue announced last week it is changing to a paid time off (PTO) system for employees. In my opinion, this change is bad for both Purdue and its employees. Currently, exempt staff receive 25 vacation days per year (22 vacation and 3 personal days) plus up to 66 sick days (for personal or family illness). The new policy will give 25 PTO days per year, to be used for vacation AND personal illness AND family illness — there will be NO additional sick leave days. Purdue will only give 25 days of PTO per year to exempt staff. IU gives 36 days, which makes IU look better to prospective hires. One principle Purdue stated for the changes was “Competitive — Attract & retain talented faculty and staff”. It’s often said around Purdue that Purdue pays less than industry does, but has better benefits. Now Purdue will pay less than industry, with similar benefits. How is this competitive? Currently, employees are eligible for up to 66 days of sick leave at 100 percent pay. But the new STD (short term disability) plan will only kick in after 14 days of illness, and will only pay 65 percent. While most employees will not need STD, they will need to take a few days off when they are sick, or for a sick child — but those sick days are being taken away. Since employees will now have to use vacation days when they’re ill, they’ll be more likely come to work when they’re sick, increasing the spread of illness. Hourly staff also will see reductions. The only real improvements are bereavement leave, and new child leave. Purdue could make the new policy more reasonable — just change it 36 PTO days (effectively keeping the 25 vacation days plus 11 sick days). That would also keep Purdue competitive with IU. – Andrew Thomas, a graduate student in the College of Science Paid time off: 'It will only get worse' In regards to the recent plan changes for time off, I am curious how much time the appointed committee actually spent researching the various benchmark places listed for the time off given. Based on my own research, Purdue is already lacking in the various leave department currently, and it will only get worse! Based on my research of seven different colleges, plus the State of Indiana, I found these basic results. I even will only include what a staff worker gets for their first year, as it often increases in later years. State of Indiana: 12 vacation/nine sick/three personal Indiana University: 14 vacation/12 sick University of Michigan: 20 PTO and extended sick leave policy Northwestern: 15 vacation/12 sick University of Illinois: up to 28 vacation/12 sick University of Chicago: 15 vacation/10 sick/five personal University of Iowa: 12 vacation/18 sick I am guessing I could probably go on and on about similar results. How much time did the committee actually spend researching and coming up with their results? Again, the above is generally the worst case scenario of leave offered. I also discovered many of these places also offered additional benefits such as donating time off for fellow employees to use and additional sick leave payments for employees who need more time paid at 100 percent, not the 65 percent short term disability. I am disappointed that I graduated from a university that values the worth of their employees so little. I hope the committee realizes that changes need to be made and will make them soon. – Rachel Miller, a Purdue alumna from Lafayette
