Michael Leahy is a recovering sex addict.
He became addicted to pornography at a young age and the addiction eventually cost him his marriage. Now a speaker against the industry, Leahy is being brought to campus to raise awareness about what pornography is doing to the nation.
"Porn Nation - The Naked Truth," Leahy's multimedia presentation, is coming to campus through Purdue's Campus Crusade for Christ, known as Purdue Cru. It will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Hall of Music and is free and open to the public.
John Ooms, a senior in the School of Mechanical Engineering, was involved in helping Campus Crusade set up the presentation. He said that over time what was known as pornography back in the 1950s is known as regular programming today.
"If you compare centerfolds from the '50s to ads now, the ads now are more revealing than Playboy centerfolds," said Ooms. "I find that interesting."
According to Leahy's Web site, there are more than 20 million men and women in the nation who are afflicted by a pornography addiction.
Kent Wilson, campus staff with Purdue Cru, said pornography is a taboo topic most people don't want to acknowledge.
"It's a silent cancer that's eating away at most guys and some of the girls and no one wants to talk about it," said Wilson. "It destroys relationships ... the addiction continues through marriage and causes problems."
Neither Wilson nor Ooms have seen Leahy's presentation, but Wilson said it will benefit the public by allowing them to see what is happening.
"(The audience will) hear how great the problem is and what used to be porn is now everyday TV," said Wilson. "Slowly it just made our mainstream entertainment more into porn."
