This morning a Purdue student was hit and killed by an Amtrak train headed to Chicago while he was walking on the tracks at the downtown Lafayette station.

Brad Babcock, 20, a student in the College of Engineering, was dead by the time the emergency crew arrived just before 8 a.m.

Lafayette Police Sgt. Rich Dexter said the incident does not appear to be a criminal incident, but it remains under investigation.

Assistant Chief Mike Hieatt with the Lafayette Fire Department said people on the train reported they saw Babcock walking on the tracks.

The train, bound for Chicago, was held at the Lafayette station and passengers remained on board for at least two hours after police arrived.
