A Purdue student died early Sunday morning after being struck by a train in Lafayette.

Philip C. Slater, 21, a pharmacy student, died shortly before 8 a.m. near the overpass on Wabash Avenue in downtown. Police believe that Slater may have committed suicide as witnesses said he was lying on the tracks as an Amtrack train approached.

The county coroner ruled the death a suicide as Slater died of blunt force trauma.

Slater was from New Berlin, Wis. The funeral visitation will be held from 4 until 6:45 p.m. (Central Time) on Friday at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 W. National Ave.. A vigil service will start at 7 p.m. at the funeral home (krausefuneralhome.com).

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Apostles Church,  1600 W. National Ave., New Berlin, Wis. Preferred memorials are to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, 205 W. 700 S., Salt Lake City, Utah 84101.
