One campus organization believes everyone can make their own impact, if even just one cookie at a time.
The Revolutionary Association for Women in Afghanistan (RAWA) is an organization founded in the 1970s in Afghanistan that advocates for the improvement of women’s rights. The Support RAWA Club was started at Purdue this semester in support of the association’s efforts, but its vision has been in the heart of Jessica Green, sophomore in the College of Science and president of the club, since high school.
The club will be holding a bake sale from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today and Wednesday and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the lobby of Beering Hall.
“If you want to make a difference in the world, you need to combat the root of the problem,” Green said. “RAWA is combating the root of Afghanistan’s mistreatment of women by educating all members of society.”
Green said the money for the bake sale will go directly to the schools, orphanages, hospitals and protests the revolutionary association supports. The schools educate both sexes and all ages. Unlike the country of its origin, the association does not discriminate.
Mangala Subramaniam, faculty supervisor for the club, believes student organizations “serve as a means, beyond courses, to become familiar with global causes,” and she said she hopes the Purdue community will fund this cause and fill their stomachs generously.
