If you see police cars or fire trucks on Purdue Mall Tuesday, don't be alarmed.

The fire and police departments are taking part in Purdue Student Government's Health and Safety Day. Lisa Rietmann, director of health and safety for PSG, said on and off-campus organizations come to give students information and demonstrations about health and safety-related topics.

"(The) Tippecanoe Health Department will be there," she said. "As well as Colleges Against Cancer, PUSH, the Co-Rec and the Purdue Motorcycle Campaign."

In addition to the organizations, Health and Safety Day will feature a blood drive. All of the blood donated will go toward the IU-Purdue Blood Donor Challenge.

This year, Rietmann said, the day has been completely reformatted.

"It is very different," she said. "It is the first time (Health and Safety Day) has been in the fall, and it is bigger."

Rietmann said the event can never be too big and the fall is a better time to host the event because students are still interested in getting information. In the spring, students are more interested in school being done, she said.

"Everyone's health and safety is important," Rietman said. "The more people that get more information at one time, the better."

James Totton, director of media communications for PSG, said he has worked with Health and Safety Day for three years and this year it will be the biggest it has been in a long time. In addition to the change of date and addition of new organizations, Totton said more advertising will help to make the event bigger as well.

"PSG is really excited about it," he said. "It is important and something people can relate to."

The police and fire departments are an exciting part of the day.

"It takes you back to the schoolkid charm," Totton said.

Rietmann said students should attend because all of the organizations can help in some way.

"It's their campus," she said. "(And an opportunity) to make their lives better as much as they can."

Health and Safety Day is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday on Purdue Mall.
