The U.S. premiere of the Kronos Quartet’s, “Music from Four Fences,” will open all possibilities of music for the future.
Inspired by Australian composer and violinist Jon Rose, the quartet will be performing on unique instruments - fences. Typically seen as objects of confinement, these specially amplified wire fences will be made into powerful musical instruments according to David Harrington, violinist in the quartet.
Willie Williams, set designer for artists such as U2 and Lady Gaga, has created the visual idea for this show. Harrington said small video cameras will be attached to the fences and the audience will be able to see the elegance of the vibrations.
“The imagery is quite different,” said Harrington. “We are taking objects of confinement and making music with them.”
According to the Convocations Web site, the symbolism of the fences is to show our relationship with the environment and the boundaries of cultures and political systems.
Xiaoguang Liu, a graduate student in the College of Engineering, is attending the concert because his friend recommended the Kronos Quartet.
“The Kronos Quartet also made sound tracks for the film ‘Requiem for a Dream,’ and I like the film and its soundtrack very much,” said Liu.
Harrington’s recommendations for those attending the show are to get a good night’s rest and bring a lot of energy and curiosity.
“The power of the fences is amazing,” he said.
