Out of an extensive list of ideas, he thought a rapping sandwich just might work.

And it did.

Courtney Hannibal, a Purdue alumnus, developed a commercial titled "Quizno's Rap" for the Quizno's vs. Subway TV Ad Challenge sponsored by Quizno's and iFilm.com. He won second place and a year's worth of Quizno's awarded as $520 in gift cards. The first place winner was awarded $10,000.

Hannibal, who graduated in May 2006 in computer graphics technology, has been trying to do as many video contests as possible so he can build his portfolio for future job prospects.

The commercial depicts a rapping Quizno's Steakhouse Beef Dip and a smaller sandwich popping in with the occasional slogan such as "Warm and Toasty!"

Hannibal's high school friend Kevin Fu, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology student, wrote the lyrics for the rap and collaborated with Hannibal through the Internet.

"It's kind of weird," said Hannibal, laughing. "The old commercials had the talking baby and the creature. I wasn't trying to mimic the style, but it pretty much came out like the old ones. I didn't think about it until afterwards."

His commercial received TV time as well. The "Quizno's Rap" was aired on VH1's "Best Year Ever." Hannibal's friend Aaron Georges remembers this well.

"I thought (the commercial) was pretty funny and then when I saw it on TV it was hilarious to see our stuff," said Georges, a senior in the College of Technology.

Georges did sound editing for the commercial and came up with the idea of the little sandwich popping in on the screen, which he notes as "adding more humor and a little something extra."

Hannibal did most of the work for the commercial, so he is the only one who receives the prize of free Quizno's for a year. This doesn't bother Georges too much because Hannibal already promised him some sandwiches.

"Yeah, I will probably take friends (to Quizno's) too because I doubt I can eat that much," said Hannibal.
