Statistics department conducts survey for city

By Amanda Anthony
Summer Editor

In another concerted effort between Purdue and the city of West Lafayette, the statistics department will be performing a survey for the Sagamore Parkway task force to determine the community's wants for the parkway.

"We like to have opportunities to practice (what we learn in class)," said John Stevens, graduate student. "This is part of the department's effort for engagement in the community."

At the meeting, Stevens passed out a rough timeline that would have the survey work done early enough to meet the task force's October deadline.

The survey design will take four to six weeks, he said, and it's important to refine the questions to get useful answers.

Stevens also warned about the survey being too long.

"If it's more than 10 or 15 minutes, I wouldn't do it," he said. "I have a short attention span."

The task force isn't sure yet to whom it will be sending the surveys; it considered only taxpayers, but Joe Hornett, who heads the group, said it will be sure not to ignore Purdue students.

"I don't think we'll end up leaving out Purdue," he said. The problem is effectively reaching the Purdue population.

He said if the group had access to SSINFO to do an online survey of Purdue students, that may be the most effective way.

"That would be a great asset," Hornett said.

Otherwise, the task force hopes to get community ideas via other means, such as Tuesday's public forum.

The task force will be having its first public forum. Starting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in City Hall, area residents will get a briefing about the task force as well as committee reports before beginning the forum part.

Once that begins, all residents are permitted three minutes to share their ideas and thoughts about Sagamore Parkway and its development.

In other business at the meeting:

n The retail committee is developing a target list of restaurants and retail establishments members think would fit the available spaces.

n The public spaces and pedestrian committees are working together on developing plans; they have a consensus on what they want, they just need to determine how.

n The transportation committee reported that Sagamore Parkway is indeed a federal highway that is not scheduled to be transferred to city control. Members are investigating developing additional frontage roads and access to frontage roads.
