Parkway task force to reveal survey results soon

By Kathryn Bennett
City Editor

Sagamore Parkway Task Force members finalized the content of a random 1,000-person survey on Aug. 27, which they hope to distribute to West Lafayette residents through the mail.

The survey, which was developed with help from Purdue statisticians, will contain questions about pedestrian access, transportation through the parkway area and the use of public spaces, said Beverly Shaw, West Lafayette's redevelopment and neighborhood planner and greenspace administrator. Questions will also address retail space and funding for parkway improvements. "What we would like to do is just get a true feel for the public input," Shaw said.

Purdue statistical experts revised the survey to make it more objective, said Shaw, and the task force reviewed the final draft at the Aug. 27 meeting.

Individual committees met separately to edit and discuss survey questions before the Aug. 27 conference, said Lisa Kochert, chair of the public spaces committee. The public spaces committee examines greenspace usage and gateways along the parkway, said Kochert.

Another major task force accomplishment came with the Aug. 19 charrette, or synthesis of all committee ideas onto one major map, said Shaw.

"Charrette" is a French term for a roving architect, said Kochert, which the task force used to describe the goal of their design meeting. At the charrette, task force members reviewed an aerial map of the parkway, she said, and color-coded specific target areas for each committee.

Task force members on the pedestrian interest committee discussed creating a potential overpass for the Sagamore Parkway area, as well as crosswalk improvement. The retail committee examined improvements to the task force Web site, such as better demographic and statistical information. A merchant association, lighting program and new signage ordinance are also being considered.

The task force, which began its meetings on May 15, hopes to conclude its mission by October, said Kochert.

The results of the charrette will be presented to the public in a public forum at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 in City Hall, said Kochert. All community members are invited to attend, she said, and all input is welcome. "We're at the point where we need to share our ideas with the public … and then hear back from them," she said.
