Philosophy department hosts Sartre conference

By Sarah Krisel
Staff Writer

A first for Purdue will happen this weekend — hosting a national conference for a philosophers' society.

The North American Sartre Society is a group of philosophers whose main focus are the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. This weekend will be the group’s 13th biennial meeting. This is a very important development for the study of philosophy at Purdue.

Martin Matustik, professor of philosophy and director of the English and philosophy Ph. D. program agreed, that having the meeting at Purdue is an exciting improvement.

Matustik said, "This is unique in the entire country as it provides an opportunity for the study of intersection between philosophy and literature at the graduate level."

The Sartre Society meets every year and a half. The program this weekend is being sponsored jointly by the Ph.D. programs in English and philosophy.

All events during the day are open to the public and free. The keynote speaker will take place today at 5 p.m.

The keynote speaker is Joseph Catalano, a retired professor of philosophy at Kean University in New Jersey.

Catalano’s speech will focus on, "Sartre’s philosophical trajectory from his early major philosophical work of existentialism, being and nothingness, to Sartre’s later analysis of one of the great literary works of the twentieth century, Emil Zola: The Family Idiot," said Matustik.

Catalano is a very well known scholar in the field.

William McBride, professor of philosophy and co-founder of the society, agreed Catalano is a well- known scholar and someone who has never presented to the society before.

McBride said, "Catalano will attempt to focus his speech so that it will be accessible to everyone including people without an in-depth scholarly expertise in major theoretical works."
