Residents call for improved safety measures along Sagamore Parkway

By Kathryn Bennett
City Editor

The results of a communitywide survey conducted by the Sagamore Parkway Task Force indicate that West Lafayette residents want better pedestrian safety measures, transportation changes and increased recreational areas.

The survey asked questions about the use of space, traffic and pedestrian issues, development and project financing.

Richard Boehning, chairman of the transportation committee, said the survey results called for upgraded landscaping along the parkway. Citizens also requested better crosswalks and more efficient signals for pedestrian walkways.

The survey, completed by 203 West Lafayette residents, represents about a 20 percent return rate, according to a report issued by Purdue statisticians.

The survey results paralleled many of the task force committees' original plans, said Boehning.

Local residents approve of using city funding to create financial incentives for parkway improvements, Boehning said.

"I think the survey confirmed that the general public thinks that's a good idea," Boehning said.

Boehning said the survey results will not change most committees' recommendations about Sagamore Parkway improvements, but they will provide task force members with a more complete guideline for upgrading the area.

Mayor Sonya Margerum said the task force will begin analyzing the report's contents before presenting a final plan to the public in late October or early November. City staff will also analyze the results.

Margerum said local residents' contributions to the survey will help task force members make crucial decisions about upgrades and changes.

"I want to thank my fellow citizens for taking the time to share their opinions on Sagamore Parkway with the task force and city," Margerum said in a statement.
