Improvathon offers 6 hours of comedy

By Craig Davison
Staff Writer

The Purdue Student Union Board and the Crazy Monkeys will host an Improvathon — a six-hour improvisational comedy show on Friday featuring Purdue’s two improv groups and three groups from other colleges.

Ship of Fools and the Crazy Monkeys will be joined by two groups from the University of Illinois, De Bono and Spicy Clamato, and one team from Michigan State, Your Mom Improv.

The event will be held in the North Ballroom of the Union and the comedy starts at 7 p.m.

At 1 a.m., a panel of judges will crown a winner.

Improvisational comedy is known for being spontaneous and unusual, and so is the seating for the show.

Advanced tickets for the show are available starting today at the PSUB office in the Union (room 268) for $5. Advanced tickets are for reserved seats where individuals can come or go at any time in the six-hour event and be able to keep their seat.

Tickets can be bought at the door for $3. These seats are lost if someone decides to leave the show for a little bit to come back later. No new purchase of a ticket is required, but you may have to wait for another seat to open up.

This way, the audience can come and go as they please, while allowing people who show up later a chance to see the show, too.

"So many people show up," said Adrienne Shroka, director of fine arts community for PSUB. "So we hope everyone that shows up has a chance to see the show."

The money from the show will go to the Purdue chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"(How tickets are set up is) a way to make more money for Big Brothers Big Sisters," said Heather Owen, program adviser at PSUB.

Angie Bauman, a five-year veteran of the Crazy Monkeys, said they do a charity event every year.

In the past they’ve done date auctions to benefit other causes, but this year the Monkeys wanted to keep it local.

"We wanted to do a charity that could benefit locally, instead of nationally," said Bauman, senior in the Schools of Engineering and the School of Liberal Arts. "We wanted to do something to affect locally."

Bauman also cited last year’s popular battle with the Ship of Fools as a reason for the Improvathon.

The improv teams aren’t the only ones excited about the event; the show’s sponsors are also looking forward to Friday.

"I think it’s really cool that people will get to see (improv groups) from other schools," Owens said.

Shroka said, "I’m really excited. I’m pretty much expecting an overly full house."
