Printer-friendly version Lecture promises fun, motivational inspiration for leadership growthBy Peter SchuStaff Writer Tonight, students will have the opportunity to cultivate their own leadership styles. Vernon Wall will present "Lead With Style!" at 6:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students and Orientation and New Student Programs, is free and open to everyone. Marc Skjervem, assistant director of Orientation and New Student Programs, said he wants students to realize that everyone is a leader. "We believe that everyone is a leader in their own right," said Skjervem. "By understanding different leadership styles, students will be more effective and aware of leadership differences when they come into situations where they have to work with others." Far from being a mere lecture, the presentation will be heavy on audience participation and will inspire attendees to realize what leadership category they belong to by having them associate themselves with a song they know. Wall is the assistant dean of students and director of student activities at Iowa State University and a senior consultant for The Washington Consulting Group, which specializes in multicultural organizational change. He has over 19 years of experience working in leadership development, Greek life and new student orientation. "We had Vernon present a lecture last April and has was very well-received," said Bridget Golden, assistant dean of students for student activities and organizations. "He always commands a presence and has a lot of impact with his audiences." The presentation will provide motivation and inspiration for anyone interested in developing themselves as leaders, and promises to be a fun night as well. Printer-friendly version |
