Boiler Blast offers chance to serve the community

By Daria Kamalipour
Staff Writer

Boiler Blast volunteers will gather at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning in Memorial Mall to give back to Purdue and the West Lafayette communities, said an assistant dean of students.

This is the first year of Boiler Blast; in previous years, the Boiler Volunteer Network sponsored an event called Spring Community Day.

Kim Martin, assistant dean of students for community engagement and involvement, and Tyler Miller, community service director, began work for the inaugural Boiler Blast at the start of this semester.

The Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, Purdue Student Government, Purdue Student Union Board and the Boiler Volunteer Network are also involved.

Scott Banich, IFC director of philanthropy and service, said, "There have been other volunteer days on campus in the past but not as large as the contributed effort of Boiler Blast."

The day will begin with a provided breakfast and a motivational speech from Purdue president Martin Jischke. During the day, volunteers will clean Purdue grounds, pass out flowers to local residents, and help the Morton Community Center, Happy Hollow Park, West Lafayette Tree Fund and George Davis Manor.

Martin wants to make it as easy for the volunteers as possible; therefore, there will be buses to transport the volunteers to the off campus locations.

Service activities will end at 1:00 p.m. with a closing ceremony and a provided lunch.

Martin said, "It will be a coming together of students and faculty to say thank you to the greater Lafayette Community."

The first 400 volunteers will receive a free T-shirt.

Students can pre-register by emailing bvn@purdue.edu or by calling 496-2450.
