Printer-friendly version Student organizations sponsor abortion debate to discuss all sides of issueBy Abby GustusCampus Editor Pro-life, pro-choice and undecided Purdue students will have an opportunity to discuss and learn both sides of the abortion issue Wednesday night. A discussion will be led by Purdue students interested in helping other students to see both sides of the issue. "Our motive is to be completely open so people have the opportunity to see both sides of the issue," said Erin Bastnagel, senior in the School of Liberal Arts. Bastnagel began working with Clint Bahler on the abortion issue last semester in an advanced public speaking class. Their instructor, who was pro-choice, said their argument premise was different and encouraged the two to take the argument further. The abortion discussion will be sponsored by Purdue Students for Life, Voices of Planned Parenthood and Purdue Organization for Womens Equality and Rights. Students attending the event can expect to come out of the discussion with a better understanding of what keeps the abortion legal and what citizens are doing for and against the issue. Each side will have an opportunity to present a 20-minute stance on the issue of abortion and a question and answer period will follow after both sides have given their presentations. Bastnagel and Bahler will present the pro-life position and both are excited to share their thoughts on the issue. "I have heard arguments based on logical reason and science," said Bastnagel. "Religion is not the best way to argue an issue when not all of America is religious." Bahler said his interest was sparked when he first went to a seminar addressing the issue. He was confused about the core issues at hand and simply wanted to know more about them, he said. Since then, the opportunity for an unbiased, open forum presented itself in the form of opposing organizations coming together to share thoughts on the issue of abortion. The pro-choice position will be presented by Sara Davidson, senior in the School of Liberal Arts and president of Voices of Planned Parenthood. The discussion will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Physics Building, Room 114. Printer-friendly version |
