Printer-friendly version Grand Prix week offers temptations
With the arrival of Grand Prix week and the warm weather that nearly always comes with it, it is usually inevitable that the number of parties and students at the bars increases during the festivities. And every year the Exponent takes this opportunity to warn students to be safe, so you’ve probably all heard it before about cautioning students to exercise good judgment.
However, this is important, particularly for freshmen who are experiencing their first Grand Prix week. As relatively new students to Purdue, it is easy to get sucked into thinking life has few responsibilities and we are here to just enjoy college and "find ourselves." Weeks like Grand Prix provide the perfect opportunity to just have fun, meet people and create a few more of those "crazy college memories" that we’ll reflect fondly upon when we’re alumni.
But, because of the large number of parties that take place during Grand Prix, there will also be an increase in the number of police officers patrolling the roads and streets. As students participate in activities, it is important to keep in mind that a stupid mistake or a poor choice could result in a police record that will stay with you for the rest of your career as a college student or as a potential job candidate later in life.
Grand Alternative hosts a variety of activities for students during the week that provide an alcohol-free environment, and those students who do choose to attend parties where alcohol is present should be careful to have a designated driver and drink responsibly. There will be an increased risk of law enforcement intervention at parties, particularly where there are underage drinkers present.
