Printer-friendly version Co-ops fail to meet alcohol regulationsFrom Staff ReportsIt was announced Wednesday that two housing cooperatives were placed on probation for violating University regulations. The decision to put Gemini Cooperative on probation was made March 26 and the decision regarding Ann Tweedale Cooperative was made April 8. Both cooperatives were put on probation for unrelated incidents involving making alcohol available to minors. The office of the Dean of Students said Gemini hosted a party in January where alcoholic beverages were accessible to minors. Gemini is on probation until Dec. 31. Tamara Rice, assistant dean of students, said that at Gemini precautions were designed to stop minors from consuming the alcohol beverages. However, the ID-checking system was inadequate. "Their rights and privileges were not revoked because they were doing some things to prevent the distribution of alcohol to minors," said Rice. "But the way they were checking the ids at the doors was inadequate." Ann Tweedale is on probation until April 30, 2005 after requiring new members to attend social functions in the fall 2003 semester where alcoholic beverages were accessible to minors. Rice said Ann Tweedale received a longer probation because the incident involved pledges. During probation student organizations retain all of their rights and privileges but they are not in good standing with the University, said Rice. The Office of the Dean of Students did not return calls as to why the release of this information was delayed. Printer-friendly version |
