The band was in the basement, there was root beer pouring down throats and students were chattering over the great music.

Those were just some of the events that took place Saturday when the Christian Student Center held a root beer kegger party.

It was more than just two kegs worth of root beer that kept the party going. Moon-walking allowed the party to release the sugar-pumped energy that was flowing through the students’ veins.

Dan Cooke, campus minister for the Christian Student Center, said that the goal of this party was to "demonstrate that you can really have a good time without alcohol involved. You can have an incredible time, and not pay for it tomorrow."

The root beer kegger took place in a townhouse setting. The atmosphere was laid back with plenty of food to eat. This food included 72 inches worth of sub sandwiches, plenty of potato chips and desserts to go around.

The turnout was great with a lot of newcomers attending as well.

Cooke said, "Any person is welcome anytime they want to come in."

That was one of the party’s goals - to make everyone feel like he or she was welcome.

"Many times people think the Christian Center is exclusive and judgmental," said Cooke. "Ultimately, we want to provide an atmosphere to allow people to encounter Christ without feeling that religion is being shoved down their throats."

The party also included a live band, The Awkward Stylist. They are closely affiliated with the Christian Student Center. Earlier in March, they performed at a coffee shop in West Lafayette.

Brandon Hombs, graduate student, and a singer and electrical guitarist for the band, described the type of music that they would be playing as "very broad music. We do rock, pop and we’re doing oldies." One of the first songs the band performed was "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" by Cake.

"When we perform, we’re aren’t really serious, we just have fun," said Hombs.

The Christian Student Center also holds other activities throughout the week for anyone who wants to come. They have a free dinner every Sunday night from 6 to 7:15 at the house. There are movie nights at 7:30 every Tuesday in the basement. The surround sound and the big screen projector aid in the spectacular nature of the movies. Worship is at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday at University Hall, Room 117.

Everything is free for the students that want to attend any of these events.
