Printer-friendly version Student leaders plan for coming yearBy Philip MeekerStaff Writer Eighty-five student leaders went on a retreat to network between their University groups, to hear from University officials and to learn how to increase student involvement. The retreat was the Fifth Annual Student Leaders Retreat held at Camp Tecumseh. Aaron Schnur, Purdue Student Government president and a senior in the School of Management, attended the three-day retreat and said it was upbeat and motivating. "I had a great discussion with the Residence Hall Council president, Ben Valliere," said Schnur. He recognized that there may have been tension between the council and PSG when senatorial seats became academic-based instead of having representatives from the dorms. However, after having the chance at the event to talk with Valliere, he thought they would get along together to "make a difference." "I dont want people to think the problems of the past are still there," said Schnur. Christopher Munt, director of the Queer Resource Center and a junior in the School of Liberal Arts, said it was nice to meet a lot of presidents from different groups and that knowing them would make working with their different groups easier. Munt said that he attended a helpful recruitment session that Katie Boyce, freshman engineering education honors program coordinator, gave. "Its more difficult for me to make people more comfortable," said Munt, speaking of the centers recruitment troubles. Purdue is a conservative university and that makes it tougher for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals to be open about who they are, Munt said. Munt said Boyce encouraged organizations to learn how to market to students whats best about the group. After hearing Boyces talk, he planned to show to students better that the center "is a lot about community, being around people open and inviting to you." Bridget Golden, assistant dean of students, said the event presented a great time for her to talk with student leaders about the upcoming year. It was announced to the students at the event that there would be a new assistant dean of student activities and organizations. Groups also met amongst themselves at the event and discussed their own goals for the year. PSG wants to participate with Boiler Volunteer Network events, said Schnur. PSG wants to help with the community service events that already exist, he said. PSG also decided it wants to make Boiler Blast, PSGs welcome back to campus, bigger. Golden said she thought the event went great and a sixth annual retreat is planned for next year. Printer-friendly version |
