Association hastens sorority recruitment

By Liz Bower
Campus Editor

For the first time at Purdue, sorority recruitment is being held in the fall.

Stacie Warner, a junior in the School of Agriculture and president of the Panhellenic Association, said, "Consistently numbers were going down each year and we needed to try a new method to get women into the system."

After recruitment Panhel will evaluate when the process should take place next year.

In an effort to recruit more women, Panhel doubled its advertising efforts this year, said Jessica Baker, a senior in the School of Education and vice president of recruitment.

Baker said the numbers registered now are on track compared to where they were at during this part of the process last year. Panhel’s goal is to have about 700 women registered, the same number of women as last year.

Recruitment lasts for four days over two weekends this year.

On Sept. 3 there is a pre-recruitment convocation, a new part of recruitment where women can ask any questions. The potential new members meet with their Gamma Chi, a sorority member who is disaffiliated from her chapter and acts as a guide for a group of women as they go through the recruitment process.

The rest of recruitment includes tours of the 15 participating houses; a casual day when each woman spends 35 minutes at 10 different houses; "cokes" day, which includes a skit, at six houses; and preference day where the women attend three houses and observe ceremonies.

"(Preference day) is a meaningful day that is traditional," Warner said.

The potential new members receive their bids on Sept. 20 from their Gamma Chi.

"Have a positive attitude, be open-minded and have fun," said Baker about the recruitment process.

Warner said women who are interested in sorority recruitment should go online to www.purduegreeks.com and register, or stop by the Panhel office, Room 288 in the Union, or call 494-2712. The last day to register is Sept. 1. For all who are interested in fraternity and sorority recruitment there are callouts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday in the Class of 1950 building For those interested in cooperative housing rush, call the Office of the Dean of Students at 494-1231.
