Panhel pushes new recruits to register during fall semester

By Liz Bower

For the first time at Purdue, sorority formal recruitment took place in the fall.

Even though the Panhellenic Association and the sorority chapters decided to move recruitment to the fall instead of winter, this year’s recruitment was one of the most successful in recent years, said Jessica Baker, vice president of recruitment.

Recruitment took place this year on the Saturday and Monday of Labor Day weekend and Saturday and Sunday of this weekend.

This year, there were 790 potential members registered for recruitment; 690 women entered into the final round of recruitment, preference day, Baker said, a senior in the School of Education.

Last year’s recruitment, which took place the weekend before Thanksgiving break and the weekend before the start of spring semester, only 765 women registered for recruitment and 473 of those women took part in preference day.

This year a new computer system was used enabling the women to do everything online from registering to ranking chapters, Baker said.

Baker said fall recruitment gave each chapter an equal opportunity to recruit women.

Stacie Warner, president of Panhel, said there was an increase in marketing for recruitment this year.

"We were well organized. We put a lot of effort in the beginning of school and we can contribute that to our strong numbers this year," said, Warner, a senior in the School of Agriculture.

Having recruitment in the fall was a trial and will be evaluated this fall. Panhel and the presidents of the chapters will determine dates for next year’s recruitment.

"Everyone stayed positive and happy people make a situation better," Warner said.

Baker said recruitment this year was new for everyone and the chapters and the Panhel officers were learning together.

Warner said the University has been great in working with the Panhel members and the University was looking out for the best interest of the women involved with recruitment.
