Purdue receives prestigious award

By Liz Bower

On Thursday the Association of University Research Parks named Purdue the Outstanding Research Park for 2004.

Gregory Deason, vice president for development for Purdue Research Foundation, said the award is a result of the effort of the people at Purdue and the foundation. He is pleased with being recognized.

"I think it is a nice recognition and validation from our peers," Deason said. "I hope in the long term that it is going to lead to our ability to recruit larger firms."

Purdue president Martin Jischke agreed with Deason.

"We are very pleased to see this kind of recognition. It confirms for many of us what we had suspected, that we have developed one of the best research parks in the country," Jischke said. "It has to be seen as a tribute to those who have worked for the last 10 years to build that park."

The park concentrates in high-technology businesses in Indiana and was established in the 1960s. In 1993 the park had its most growth after the creation of a business incubation program. More than 40 companies are "incubating" within the park’s high-tech business incubation complex. There are 70 technology companies in the 1.3 million square feet of research and manufacturing space in the 591-acre park.

Among the companies that have incubated and grown in the park are gh LLC, a company that produces accessibility products for people with physical disabilities; Griffin Analytical Technologies Inc., a developer of miniature mass spectrometry; and SSCCI Inc., a company that analyzes drug compounds for the pharmaceutical industry.

The Association of University Research Parks represents more than 120 university research parks. The award was announced at the annual conference in San Antonio.
