Printer-friendly version Sign competition reminds all of voting importanceBy Laura DobslawStaff Writer In an effort to raise voter awareness, a sign competition is being held to gain students’ attention and remind them to vote. The competition is sponsored by Mortar Board, a national college senior honor society. It is open to all fraternities, sororities, cooperative houses and residence hall councils. The signs are made from sheets and will hang from each individual house that is participating. Evan Apotheker, the project coordinator for Mortar Board, said that the competition is being held to increase attention for voting and encourage an active interest in politics. "My goal for the competition is that the people who are making the signs will take more of an interest in politics by encouraging other people to do so," said Apotheker. According to Pablo Malavenda, the associate dean of students, this competition is being held in coalition with other events by student organizations to raise voter awareness. He said the other organizations have done a lot to get students registered, so it would be a shame for the students to forget to vote. "It is important to understand that it is a lifelong commitment to vote," said Malavenda. "It’s not just about voting for a candidate. Students are also able to make their voice heard when it comes to policy making." Reminding students to vote in the upcoming election is the first step to their lifelong commitment. The signs for the competition must be no larger than a regular queen-size sheet and must contain a non-partisan, appropriate message reminding students to vote on Nov. 2. The signs will be judged on creativity, neatness, originality and American spirit. Printer-friendly version |
