Printer-friendly version Cooperative Housing provides alternative to dorm, Greek lifeBy Laura DobslawStaff Writer Students looking for a place to live next year can rush Purdue’s Cooperative Housing. There are seven women’s cooperative houses and five men’s houses on campus. Men’s rush and women’s formal rush will be held on Jan. 22 and Jan. 29. Women’s informal rush is February 4 and 5. Cooperative housing is an environment where the members of the house do all the cooking and cleaning to maintain the house. Therefore, living in a cooperative is less expensive than living in a fraternity or sorority, said Lindsey Thieme, the president of the Purdue Cooperative Council. Thieme said that living in a cooperative is both economically and socially beneficial. "The major benefit of a co-op is the atmosphere," said Thieme. "I got to know so many people and the number of connections that I have made is amazing." Cooperative housing rush is a process where interested students get a chance to look at all the houses on campus, as well as meet some of the current members. Cooperative houses are smaller than most fraternities and sororities, ranging from 14 to 60 members. This smaller atmosphere is one of the reasons that many members of cooperatives enjoy the living experience. Aaron Makin, the vice president of cooperative relations, said that he joined a house to become involved with the community environment. "Cooperatives allow you to experience brotherhood, as well as provide you with the chance to establish leadership skills," said Makin. Students who are interested in rushing a cooperative can download a rush application on the co-op Web site at www.purduecooperatives.com. A callout for those interested in joining a cooperative house is Dec. 1 in Smith Hall, room 118. Printer-friendly version |
