Printer-friendly version Men's team drops seventh straight gameBy David HeckardSenior Writer Purdue looked to its last non-conference opponent to break its losing streak. But, like conference play, Purdue found an all too familiar scenario Wednesday evening — another loss. The Boilers dropped their seventh straight game with a loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee,73-68. Purdue (4-13, 0-6 Big Ten) allowed the Panthers to shoot 47 percent as a team, including 55 percent in the second half. "I think they did a pretty good job of penetrating and pitching," junior David Teague said. "On the defensive end, we did a poor job of communicating." The Panthers (15-4, 8-1 Horizon League) used a full-court press to disrupt the Purdue offense. The Boilers had 19 turnovers. "Our kids worked really hard (on breaking the press) this week but then we get in the game when the lights are on, and we panic and throw it right into their hands," Keady said. "It’s like you’re shocked." The turnovers and defensive pressure led the Boilers to shoot 39 percent from the field and 12 percent from 3-point range. "I think sometimes we play (tentatively)," senior Brandon McKnight said. "(We) know we don’t have a lot of room for error. We try not to make a mistake sometimes because we have to be almost perfect to win." The Boilers opened a 10-point lead in the first half and were in control of the game until midway through the second half. With junior forward Carl Landry on the bench with his third foul, Wisconsin-Milwaukee was able to go on a 15-3 run to take the lead. "You could just see before guys got the ball when they were open, you knew they were going to make them," Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach Bruce Pearl said. "You could just see they were in rhythm and they wanted the ball." The Boilers pulled within four following a Teague 3-pointer, but Panther Mark Pancratz answered with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to seven. Purdue responded late in the game with Landry scoring six points in the final three minutes and 40 seconds. But a 3-pointer from Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Boo Davis increased the Wisconsin-Milwaukee lead to seven. "The kids stayed poised," Pearl said. "The fact that we played so many road games as a mid-major, we just didn’t panic." Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s starting five all had double-digits in scoring, while Purdue had two players in double-digits. Landry had a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard David Teague had 15 points. The seventh straight loss is the most consecutive losses in the Keady era at Purdue. Purdue’s last win was on Jan. 2, an 87-67 victory against Eastern Illinois. "(We need) to keep working, keep having respect for your players and keep teaching saying they’re going to break loose," Keady said. "We just have to keep our heads up. (The players) just have to keep working and have faith in each other." The Boilers return to conference action Sunday against Michigan at 1:30 p.m in Mackey Arena.
