Wounded Michigan squad comes to town on Sunday

Purdue continues to make history this season.

The Boilers, who haven’t won a game in 26 days, have a 1-7 record in the month of January. It’s Purdue’s worst record since the Boilers lost all of their January games in the 1962-63 season.

The Boilers (4-13, 0-6 Big Ten) will look to end the seven game losing streak Sunday against Michigan.

The Wolverines (12-7, 3-2) have made news off the court this week.

Junior guard Daniel Horton was suspended indefinitely from the team after being charged with a domestic violence misdemeanor on Monday.

"We feel it is in everyone’s best interest that we suspend Daniel pending further review," Michigan coach Tommy Amaker said in a statement. "We feel this is the right course of action at this time."

Horton averaged 12.4 points and 4.2 assists per game this season. He will not practice or travel with team during the suspension.

The loss of Horton adds another problem for an already injury-plagued Wolverine team. Eight players from Michigan have missed at least one game this season, including junior wing player Lester Abram, who is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Abram averaged 13.1 points per game last season.

"I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything like it," Michigan assistant coach Charles Ramsey said. "We’ve become somewhat numb to injuries, we just look down the bench and someone else steps up."

Purdue will attempt to put together 40 quality minutes of defense. The Boilers have allowed opponents to shoot 45.7 percent this season, but recently Purdue has been suspect guarding the 3-point shot.

The Boilers allowed Wisconsin-Milwaukee to shoot 61.5 percent in the second half in Wednesday’s loss.

"Against good teams, you’ve got to be able to do both," junior guard David Teague said. "It’s just putting it together and doing both. It’s hard to do but that’s what expected at this level."

The Wolverines say Purdue’s 4-13 record is not indicative of the Boilers’ play.

"Purdue is a much better basketball team than their record shows," Ramsey said. "They could very easily have a record as good, if not better, than ours in conference play."

The Boilers will again look to junior forward Carl Landry for offense. Landry has had four double-doubles this season, including a 26-point, 10-rebound performance in Wednesday’s loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

"He’s going to have to be a factor for us on the inside the rest of the year and score if we’re going to have a chance to win," Keady said. "Without him scoring, we’re probably in trouble on the inside."

With the Boilers not even halfway through the conference season, Keady is already looking to the Big Ten Tournament.

"(We need) to keep doing the things we practice and have a W," Keady said. "We’ve got a big game here Sunday, and we’re striving to get ready for the Big Ten Tournament I’d say."

The game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday and will be televised on CBS.
