Purdue senior passes due to congenital heart defect

Shane Partin had such an affinity for reptiles that he named his e-mail address, Iheartreptiles@hotmail.com.

"(His fiancee) Kristen made them passport holders with lizards all over them," said Laura Shumar, a graduate student who accompanied Partin on a trip to Germany as part of a history course.

Partin, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts, died at the age of 28 on Saturday morning from complications of a congenital heart defect. He was born on Aug. 1, 1976, in Muncie, Ind., and was the son of Jerry Partin and Karen Estes.

Shumar said it was a joy to travel through Germany with Partin since he was always ready to offer help to his fellow travelers.

"He was probably the most enthusiastic person on the trip," Shumar said. "It was kind of funny, really, to see this big, macho-looking guy get so excited about art.

"His excitement was really contagious."

Partin was on the trip as part of a class taught by Gordon Mork, a professor of history, and took another course on the Holocaust and genocide the next semester.

"He was interested in the churches we saw, in visiting the Dauchau concentration camps," he said.

"He was very friendly and happy, but a person who was a very serious student of the whole period."

A year before, Darlene Lemen, assistant director of community relations, said Partin’s friendly nature was helpful for the tours he would give to elementary school children when he worked for the Visitor Information Center.

"He was very Purdue pride; he loved Purdue and he was very good with children," she said.

"We enjoyed and appreciated his talents at the Visitor Center."

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Main and Frame Blue River Chapel, on Highway 36 midway between Mooreland and Mt. Summit. Burial will follow the Mooreland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

He is survived by his mother, Karen (husband-Kenneth) McKeehan of Moorleland, Ind.; his father, Jerry (wife-Lida) Partin of Middletown, Ind.; his fiancee, Kristin Maurer of Boonville, Ind.; his maternal grandparents, Warren and Annabel Estes of Greenwood, Ind.; his paternal grandmother, Edna Mae Partin of Barberville, Ky.; two sisters, Laura (husband-David) Spears of Lewisville, Ind. and Andrea (husband-Robert) North of Muncie, Ind.; three brothers, Brian Carney of Mooreland, Ind.; Aaron (wife-Katasha) Carney of Hartford City, Ind. and Michael (wife-Tawni) Partin of Nobelsville, Ind.
