Printer-friendly version Curry expects sweet future for Boilers
Sports Editor Purdue’s season came to an end on Tuesday in the second round against Tennessee, but the Boilers expect to be back in the Sweet 16 soon. Boilermaker coach Kristy Curry is confident her team will be headed to a regional site this time next year. "A year from tonight we are headed to the Sweet 16," Curry said. Along with that accomplishment, Curry also knows Purdue will get better and will be in line for not one, but two Big Ten Championship rings next year. "We have to get better so that a year from now we have two Big Ten Championship rings on our fingers," Curry said. "One ring from the tournament and one from the regular season." Curry talks about these accomplishments because of the players Purdue has coming back next season. Purdue returns four players who averaged 20 or more minutes per game this season. The Boilers lose only one player — Emily Heikes — who averaged more than 20 minutes per game. Two of those four returning players include Purdue’s leading scorers, sophomore duo Katie Gearlds and Erin Lawless. Gearlds averaged 14.1 points per game this season and led Purdue with 35.6 minutes per game. Lawless led the Boilers this season with 14.2 points per game and was second on the team with 5.8 rebounds per game. The other two players averaging more than 20 minutes per game were junior guard Sharika Webb and freshman forward Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton. Webb began the season as a starter but digressed to a backup by midseason. Webb, however, finished the season with several starts and recorded the first double-double of her career on Tuesday. Wisdom-Hylton made an impact early on for the Boilers as she started in 21 of 30 games this season. She also averaged 24.5 minutes per game and was selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Purdue has also signed Jodi Howell, a senior guard at Alexandria High School. Howell averaged 28.7 points per game during her senior season and won Miss Basketball of Indiana. Along with Howell, Curry said the Boilers have several players returning who made improvements all season long and will continue to learn and grow. "With Brina (Pollack), Natasha (Bogdanova) and Aya (Traore) really coming along we have a great squad coming back," Gearlds said. With established leaders, a talented freshman and improving role players, Curry’s Sweet 16 prediction may not be too far off. Printer-friendly version |
