Printer-friendly version Grand Alternative offers students many optionsBy Alysha DaytnerAssistant Campus Editor For those who chose to abstain from alcohol during Grand Prix weekend, there is an alternative. Grand Alternative, a series of events sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, provides substance-free activities provided by student groups and organizations. "Grand Alternative is for students, by students," said Bridget Golden, assistant dean of students. "Students have choices every day, this gives them more opportunities to make good choices." Choices for Grand Alternative 2005 include 52 events, from root beer "keggeroke" to films to tricycle races, and are made possible by grants from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County. This year $8,000 worth of grants were given to student organizations, said Erin Ansfild, a graduate administration professional. "This week has unfortunately become a big party week, Grand Alternative is to remind students that drinking doesnt need to be part of your Grand Prix fun." And that was the goal of the event, officially started in 1999 by Steve Cain, campus minister at the Wesley Foundation. Grand Alternative also has support from the Student Wellness Office Tammy Loew, health advocacy coordinator for the Student Wellness Office, said contrary to prior assumptions, "Every student on this campus will not be trashed throughout the week. The students who choose to get trashed draw more attention to themselves." Grand Alternative events begin Saturday and continue through April 24.
