JACKSON COUNTY, Al. (WLFI) — A Purdue student is dead after falling around 200 feet while cave rappelling in Alabama.
News 18's sister station in Huntsville, Alabama reports that 21-year-old Trever Col was rappelling in Valhalla Cave, when the rigging came loose due to a knot in the rope. When Col tried to fix it, he fell.
Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips said it happened around 8:30 Saturday morning and that he died on impact. He said Col was with four other Purdue students at the time, and that the group had to drive more than a mile to be able to call for help.
According to the Purdue University Student Directory, Col was a mechanical engineering student. He was originally from Austin, Texas. News 18 has reached out to Purdue for a comment and have yet to hear back.
