A 21-year-old Purdue student walked away with minor injuries after a car crashed into him riding a mountain bike Wednesday, pushing him onto the car's hood and windshield.
The driver of a black Honda Civic, Christopher Stevens of Lafayette, told West Lafayette police he was headed south on Northwestern Avenue about 750 feet from the Grant Street intersection when Joseph Balo "suddenly came out in front of him" in the crosswalk in front of the Northwestern Avenue parking garage. Balo told police at the scene he had not paid attention to the crosswalk sign before riding west in the pedestrian crossing.
The mountain bike was destroyed, and the car was towed away, with police estimating $2,500 to $5,000 worth of damage.
Balo had cuts to his hands and abrasions on his head and right leg, according to the WLPD report, but declined medical treatment at the scene.
