The driver of a semi-trailer truck carrying automobiles was able to escape before an oncoming train crashed into it about 1 p.m. today at the CSX Railroad crossing at the intersection of 900 North and Harrison Road.
St. Joseph County police say the semi-truck with trailer from DST Transport was hauling four passenger vehicles for delivery. As the semi crossed over the train tracks, the trailer became stuck on the tracks.
The train’s engineer attempted to stop the train but was unable to do so, police said.
The semi and the vehicles being hauled were all heavily damaged. The train was also damaged, according to police, but was able to continue after the investigation.
