Broken glass and a blood trail led West Lafayette police to a nearby apartment where police say the burglar lives.
Shortly after 6 a.m. Monday, police were called to a break-in at the West Lafayette Smoke Shop in Chauncey Hill Mall. The glass door was shattered and various paraphernalia was stolen, according to Lt. Jon Eager.
Officers quickly discovered the suspect, 19-year-old Cameron Benefiel, apparently injured himself on the glass door he broke to gain access to the shop.
Due to the cuts on his leg, Benefiel reportedly left a blood trail down the Chauncey Street sidewalk to the Chauncey Pointe Apartments, "The U," at the corner of Chauncey and Harrison streets. The trail led the officers "right back to him," Eager said.
Benefiel is registered as a Purdue management student in the Purdue directory.
An employee with the West Lafayette Smoke Shop declined to comment on the incident.
Police said Benefiel, with bandages on his injured legs, is being booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail on preliminary charges of burglary.
