The Event Horizon Telescope that captured the first image of a black hole had some help from a West Lafayette native.
Katie Bouman, a West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High School graduate, was part of the team that took the first photo of the black hole Messier 87 and announced its findings Wednesday. She was responsible for the algorithm that helped take the photo.
Bouman studied electrical engineering in undergrad at the University of Michigan and earned her master's and doctorate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Bouman's father, Charles Bouman, is also a professor at Purdue in the departments of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering.
